The Ordinary: review and recommendations

Usually when I try a new skincare range or item, it’ll take me about 2 weeks to notice a real difference (if it makes one), so I’ve been using The Ordinary (a brand by Deciem) for approximately one and a half months now, and let me tell you-

I’m in love.

I hauled a few items after I saw it hyped up all over my social media, and was particularly drawn in by the price point and simplistic packaging. I purchased the following products off Beautylish, however NZ gals can order off Shop MUO for much faster shipping.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

What it claims: to attract up to 1,000 times it’s weight in water. Claims to plump the skin and create a smooth surface. The addition of B5 also enhances surface hydration.

Price point: $6.80 USD.

Usage: it’s been 3 months and I’m half way through the 30ml bottle.

Review: I flippin LOVE this, it is the weight of water and soaks into the skin almost immediately. I apply fresh out of the shower or after a hot steam and it gives my skin life- I definitely will be repurchasing.

The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG.

What it claims: reduce the appearance of dark circles, puffiness and under eye bags in the eye contour.

Price point: $6.70 USD.

Usage: I have been using this twice daily and haven’t even used a quarter of the 30ml bottle, a little goes a long way.

Review: for the price, it’s awesome. It hydrates my under eye area (not as well as a creamier formula) and reduces immediate puffiness. I’m interested to try it during hayfever season as my eyes become like golf balls. If I ever finish it- I will possibly repurchase to save $$ on higher end brands.

The Ordinary High-Spreadability Fluid Primer.

What it claims: it acts as a light surface hydrator that creates a smooth canvas for makeup.

Price point: $7.90 USD.

Usage: I’ve used this once- it also came only filled about 4/5 of the way up. A little does go a long way particularly if you put it on freshly moisturised skin.

Review: I’m not that impressed by this, I found it to feel silicon-ey (definitely not a word) on my skin- it does very clearly state this as the main ingredient on the website though. I did try it with a silicone based foundation but still was ‘meh’ plus 90% of the foundations I use are water based and therefore not suitable for this primer so if anyone would like to try it, hit me up! Haha.

The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors + HA.

What it claims: immediate and long lasting hydration, NMF also replenishes compounds found in the skin that deplete over time.

Price point: $5.80 USD.

Usage: I purchased the 30ml bottle and (spoiler alert) have only just had to repurchase last week. This time I’ve got the 100ml because….

Review: I’m bloody in love. Moisturiser is probably my favourite skin case product because it makes or breaks a good routine, and this one ticks all my boxes. It’s lightweight, non-greasy and provides a demi-matte finish. Makeup adheres to this well (I skip primer) and I don’t feel like it’s all just soaked in and disappeared. 10 points to NMF!!

All in all, I’m super happy with the brand as a whole, and have just ordered the ‘Buffet’ to help with pre-pre-mature ‘aging’. For the price, this would be an awesome skincare regime for teens, youth, or people like me who change their minds every 5 minutes and have an 18-step skincare routine.

I can’t wait to pick up more in the USA!!

In love and supple skin,

Kas xx
